Computer Vision Syndrome and The Role of Vision Therapy in Reducing Stress

stress awareness BlogAre you feeling increasingly stressed at work after long hours in front of your computer? Do you carry that stress home as you read the news or watch shows on your TV or tablet? For better or worse, we live in a time where electronics are a constant part of our lives, sometimes causing unpleasant symptoms and driving up our stress levels throughout the day.

As National Stress Awareness Month brings attention to all the different things that contribute to our daily stress, understanding the link between prolonged screen time and visual stress is more important than ever before.

Computer Vision Syndrome and Stress at Home, Work, and School

Computer vision syndrome (CVS), or digital eye strain, results from focusing the eyes on a computer or other digital device for extended, uninterrupted periods. Symptoms include headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, and eye strain. In today's digital age, where screen time includes both work and leisure time, the risk of developing these symptoms has skyrocketed, driving up stress levels throughout the day.

CVS affects both adults and children, with remote learning, online meetings, TV, video games, and more all increasing the risk of eye strain and, consequently, stress. This is where the role of vision therapy comes in.

Vision Therapy and How It Helps

Vision therapy is a structured and customized program of visual activities designed to improve mastery of visual skills such as tracking, convergence, and fixation. These skills are key for children and adults to combat the root causes and effects of computer vision syndrome. Reducing the strain on the eyes throughout the day means less stress overall.

As we observe National Stress Awareness Month, it's vital to recognize the impact of our digital habits on our health. By being mindful of our screen time and taking proactive measures to manage it, we can alleviate both the visual strain and the associated stress, leading to healthier, more balanced lives at work and home.
